5 Common Lighting Part Problems and How to Fix Them

Lighting is an integral part of any home, but it's not uncommon for homeowners to face various issues with their lighting parts. Understanding these problems and knowing how to fix them can save time and money.

In this post, we'll explore five common lighting part problems and provide step-by-step solutions.

1. Flickering Lights

Flickering lights can be annoying, and are often a sign of a loose light bulb or a problem inside your light fixture.

Causes and Fixes:

  • Loose Bulbs: Turn off the light, if you're using an old style halogen bulb instead of a modern LED light bulb wait for your light bulb to cool down, and then gently tighten it.
  • Faulty Switches: If the bulb is not the issue, check your light switch. Replace if necessary.
  • Fluctuating Voltage: Sometimes, flickering can be due to voltage fluctuations. If other appliances cause flickering, consult an electrician. They should be able to use a multi-meter to determine if your electric current less than 110 volts which could cause an issue.

2. Buzzing Sounds

A buzzing sound from your lights can be annoying and unsettling. This noise is typically related to electrical issues.

Causes and Fixes:

  • Dimmer Switch Issues: Some dimmer switches can cause buzzing with certain types of bulbs, like LEDs. Make sure your bulbs are compatible with your dimmer switch. If you have an older LED dimmer it's very possible that it isn't perfectly compatible with modern dimmable LED bulbs.
  • Loose Wiring: Turn off the power and check the fixture for any loose wiring. With the power to the fixture turned off at the junction box, tighten any loose connections.

3. Burnt-Out Bulbs

Frequent bulb burn-outs can be frustrating and might indicate an underlying issue.

Causes and Fixes:

  • High Voltage: The voltage going to your fixture could be too high. This can cause frequent bulb blowouts and/or cause your bulbs to not last to their stated bulb life. Have your electrician use a mutli-meter or voltage tester to check if the voltage in your home is too high.
  • Bulb Quality: Invest in high-quality bulbs that are less likely to burn out quickly. Buying cheap bulbs can mean a lower bulb lifespan. (We suggest you avoid buying bulbs from popular Swedish superstores, as we have found these bulbs to have much lower life span than other bulbs.)
  • Wrong Bulb Type: Ensure you're using the right type of bulb for your fixture. While this is fairly uncommon, it does occassionally happen. For example an E27 bulb, which is used in Australia, Europe and the UK, looks almost identical to an E26 bulb. However, E27 bulbs are made for use with 220-240v systems and will not work correctly in the United States with your lamp.

4. Broken Light Sockets

A broken light bulb socket can render a lamp useless and can also be a safety hazard.

Causes and Fixes:

  • Wear and Tear: Over time, sockets can wear out. Turn off the power, remove the old socket, and replace it with a new one following manufacturer instructions. Note that there are multiple different styles and sizes of light bulb sockets. Make sure that you have the correct lamp part to replace your socket.
  • Corrosion: Corrosion can prevent proper contact. Clean the socket with a contact cleaner or replace it if necessary. We generally use distilled white vinegar on the end of a cotton swab to clean corrosion.

5. Tripping Circuit Breakers

If your lights cause the circuit breaker to trip, it's a sign of an electrical problem that needs immediate attention.

Causes and Fixes:

  • Overloaded Circuit: Make sure you’re not overloading the circuit with too many appliances. If a circuit has too much of a load on it this can be a big problem.
  • Short Circuit: This is a more serious issue. Short circuits can occur when your wiring is damaged. The electrical current will try to follow the shortest path, and if your wiring is damaged or if there is water present somewhere this can shorten the path and cause a "short". This can cause very serious issues, including sparks and fires. If you suspect a short circuit, it's best to consult an electrician immediately!

Preventative Maintenance Tips

Regular maintenance can prevent many common lighting problems:

  • Regularly check and tighten all of your light bulbs.
  • Clean dust and debris from your light fixtures.
  • Inspect wiring periodically for signs of wear or damage. This is especially true if you have a lamp or fixture that may be in an area of high friction.

While many lighting issues can be fixed at home, some problems require professional expertise. If you're not confident in your ability to fix an issue safely, or if the problem involves complex wiring, it's ALWAYS best to call a licensed electrician.

CONCLUSION

Understanding common lighting part problems and knowing how to fix them can enhance your home's functionality and safety. By following these tips and tricks, you can ensure that your home lighting remains in top condition. Remember, regular maintenance is key to preventing issues and extending the life of your lighting fixtures.
