Tutorial #3 - How to connect a plug?

We’ve reached the third episode of our Tutorials!

After learning how to strip our fabric cables and then how to connect a socket, today we’ll see how to connect the plug: a very simple and quick task, but for this very reason it’s worth learning to do it yourself, saving time and money without having to call an electrician.

First of all, let’s clarify that there are different types of plugs: in this case, we’ll be wiring a European two-pin plug, used in many lamps and various applications across almost all European countries. The special feature of this plug is that it doesn’t require a ground connection, so it can be used with our 2x0.75 electrical wire. It’s also not polarized, so it can be plugged in either way without any issues, and inserted into the wall socket.

The tools needed to connect the electric plug are very basic: a screwdriver, preferably with an insulated handle, will be enough! Of course, remember that it is essential to carry out the entire operation with no electrical current for complete safety.

So let's start by disassembling the plug: unscrew the screw on the outer body and, once opened, remove the internal strain relief, which is held in place by two screws. The latter protects the plug in case of "tugs," preserving its functionality.

Remove the electrical wire housing (shown in green in the photos) from its place inside the plug and loosen the terminal screws. Once that's done, it's time to insert the previously stripped electrical wires: if you don't know how, you can read our tutorial on how to strip fabric-covered electrical wire! Once the wires are in the correct terminals, tighten the screws and place the housing back into the plug body.

We’ve almost finished wiring our plug, all that’s left is to reassemble it! Close the internal strain relief by screwing the screws back into the plug body. Make sure the clamp presses on a section of cord that hasn’t been stripped yet, for greater stability! Finally, reposition the plug body and tighten the external screw. That’s it: we’ve wired our electrical plug!

All clear? Did you manage, or did you run into any problems? Let us know in the comments, and as always, tell us which tutorials you’d like to see in the future!
