How to choose bathroom lights: a buying guide

Have you recently moved and want to renovate your bathroom? Do you need to change the lighting in your laundry room but don’t know where to start?

We’ve prepared a guide for you to help you choose the right lighting for your bathroom, putting your safety first.

Here are the steps to follow to light your bathroom

1. Every area of your bathroom needs the right IP protection rating

Bathroom lighting requires specific lamps that meet certain standards for water and moisture protection. These standards are defined by the IP rating, which stands for "International Protecting." The IP rating consists of 2 numbers: the first indicates protection against solids, the second against water and moisture.

Depending on where you need to place your light source, you’ll need to choose lamps with different IP ratings: each area of the bathroom has specific rules, and the image beside will help you identify them.

  • Zone 1 is the area closest to the bathtub or shower (up to 225 cm above the bottom), where there is a lot of humidity and certainly water. For this area, choose lamps with a high protection rating, IP65: check out our water-resistant lamps from the EIVA line.
  • Zone 2 is located directly above the shower cabin, around the sink and around the bathtub, and up to 60 cm from zone 1. For this area, choose lamps with a minimum protection rating of IP44, such as the lighting solutions by Creative-Cables made with the Lumet System.
  • The rest of the bathroom isn’t in direct contact with water droplets, but may be exposed to condensation and requires a minimum IP21 rating.

2. Every lamp has its function

In the bathroom, we carry out a multitude of activities, and in addition to choosing lighting that is safe and matches our decor, it's important to select it based on the function it can serve.
Let’s take a look together at how you can make the most of your bathroom lighting.

Makeup lights

Adjustable lamps are perfect to be placed on the sides of a mirror where you shave, do your makeup, or give yourself a manicure.

Thanks to the joint they’re equipped with, you can adjust the angle of the light both vertically and horizontally, so you can adapt it to your needs.

We recommend checking out Fermaluce EIVA for adjustable and water-resistant wall lights.

Mirror lights

Would you like to increase the brightness of your bathroom by installing one or more light sources near the mirror?

For this purpose, L-shaped wall lamps are perfect, both in the version with a lampshade and the one with an exposed LED light bulb. For greater safety, choose lamps with IP65 rating.

Bathroom pendants

If what you need instead is a ceiling light, we recommend creating your own custom water-resistant light by choosing the length of the fabric cord and whether to offset it to best adjust the light within your space.

With EIVA pendant lights, you can match the component colors to your bathroom and create the custom lighting you’ve always wanted.
